Patient Education: FAQ

DO YOU NEED TO SEE US?

Here at The Recovery Lab clients are often unsure if Physiotherapy, Neurokinetic Therapy, Rehabilitation or Massage Therapy is right for them. Clients often tell us they worry that if  aches, pain & injuries are left things could become worse. But equally people understandably will hope that there physical issues will resolve by themselves overtime. Therefore the answer is a little more complex than you might first think.

Below are a few points that you find helpful as a guide:

1. If your pain is mechanical in nature? (pain made worse by particular movements or activities)

By mechanical we mean a problem that is increased by different stresses i.e. knee pain made worse by using stairs or hip pain made worse by swimming, or perhaps It might be lower back pain made worse by bending over and picking things up. If there is a mechanical competent to your pain, physiotherapy or Neurokinetic Therapy may be the answer for you.

2. Seeking Physiotherapy or Neurokinetic Therapy care if the pain is not getting better, or getting worse.

Here at The Recovery Lab clients often say to us “Should I have come to see you earlier”. This is a difficult thing to judge as many of us get aches and pains that will resolve within a number of days. Therefore, clients will leave the pain for a while in the hope that it will resolve and get better by itself. Pains that are not getting better or even worse by themselves may require a The Recovery Labs input. Or at least an assessment or diagnosis to understand how long it is likely to take to resolve and things that you can do to facilitate their recovery process. Some problems like Tendonitis/Tendinopathy may settle with rest & inactivity but flare up each time you try to return to sport or activity. If so, then strengthening and rehabilitation may be the key and this is where Physiotherapy can be extremely helpful.

3. If the pain is very severe and affecting your movement or ability to carry out you activities of daily living.

GP’s can often be difficult to see and are limited in the time and resources they will be able to offer. If you awake with a severe neck pain or experience a sudden onset of severe low back pain causing you difficulty in functioning, it could be best to come and see a physiotherapist who will be able to see you immediately, assess, diagnose and treat your symptoms; allowing you to get back to full function as soon as possible. Physiotherapists will also screen you for any signs of serious underlying issues that would require you to go to A&E for further investigations or medical input.

4. Pains that have been ongoing for a long time that are preventing you from doing daily activities, hobbies or sports.

Lots of pains can be insidious in nature and gradually prevent us from doing activities, we will slowly give up on our interests & hobbies because of a restriction in movement, weakness or pain. So of we see people who are unable to return to a sport following an injury because they have a perception that they are too weak or they re-injure themselves. Physiotherapy & Neurokinetic Therapy can be extremely effective in these circumstances. At The Recovery Lab our therapists will assess you to see whether there is any muscle weakness, tightness, reduced proprioception, balance or coordination resulting in their  why people feel unstable or vulnerable when performing an activity. Physiotherapy & Neurokinetic Therapy can be excellent when addressing these deficits and helping you get back to your sports and activities.
